M23 Rebel Group Withdraws from Some Areas They Seized in Eastern DRC The M23 rebel fighters, who are supported by Rwanda, have withdrawn from several areas they had seized in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), including the well-known town of Sange near the border with Burundi. According to reports from DW Africa, local officials, Congolese army forces, and the M23 group have all confirmed the withdrawal from these areas. Currently, DRC government forces have moved into some of the zones that M23 has vacated. This retreat follows pressure from the United States, which urged both sides to respect the ceasefire agreement, stop fighting, and revive the peace process between the DRC and Rwanda. Despite this, M23 has stated that it still controls the Kamanyola area, which lies at the tri-border junction of the DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi. Eastern DRC has long been plagued by insurgencies, largely driven by competition over valuable minerals and land.

The Weight of Kwacha Agnes Phiri stood in front of the shelf at Chipiku Store in Lilongwe, staring at a 2-kilogram bag of sugar. MK4,500. She blinked, thinking maybe the price tag had a decimal in the wrong place. Last month, it was MK3,200. Three months ago, MK2,500. Now, four thousand five hundred almost a third of her weekly salary. "Madam, are you buying?" the shop assistant asked, already impatient. Behind Agnes, a queue of tired women clutched empty shopping baskets. Agnes did the math in her head. MK4,500 for sugar. A 20-liter jerry can of cooking oil: MK18,000. A 50kg bag of maize flour: MK25,000 if you could find it. Last week at the market, vendors had been asking MK30,000. Her children needed to eat nsima every day. But at these prices, nsima had started to feel like a luxury. She put the sugar back. Her husband, Gift, had left for work at 4 a.m. He drove a minibus along the M1 from Lilongwe to Mchinji, but the fuel prices had wrecked everything. Diesel was now MK3...

Stranger in My Own Continent: A Malawian’s Story of Xenophobia in South AfricaBy Tionge Phiri (Guest)Johannesburg I never thought I would know the taste of fear. Not like this. I left Lilongwe five years ago with a dream stitched into the lining of my suitcase. South Africa was supposed to be the promised land the economic heartbeat of Africa, where a hardworking man could send money home to his mother and build something for his children. I am Malawian. We are peaceful people. We come to work, not to fight. But in South Africa, that doesn't seem to matter. The Day Everything Changed It was a Tuesday in April. I was walking home from my shift at a warehouse in Germiston  twelve hours of lifting boxes, my back screaming, but my heart light because I had just sent R1,500 to my sister for her school fees. Then I heard the chanting. “Ayihlale le ndawo! Susa abokufika!” (This land must be emptied! Remove the foreign...
