M23 Rebel Group Withdraws from Some Areas They Seized in Eastern DRC

The M23 rebel fighters, who are supported by Rwanda, have withdrawn from several areas they had seized in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), including the well-known town of Sange near the border with Burundi.

According to reports from DW Africa, local officials, Congolese army forces, and the M23 group have all confirmed the withdrawal from these areas.

Currently, DRC government forces have moved into some of the zones that M23 has vacated.

This retreat follows pressure from the United States, which urged both sides to respect the ceasefire agreement, stop fighting, and revive the peace process between the DRC and Rwanda.

Despite this, M23 has stated that it still controls the Kamanyola area, which lies at the tri-border junction of the DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi.

Eastern DRC has long been plagued by insurgencies, largely driven by competition over valuable minerals and land.
